Wonderful article and I've always liked Martha Gellhorn, but what made me uneasy in this article were the two suicides -- years apart -- true, but still it was almost as if suicide is a communicable disease. Terribly sad that two great writers -- Hemingway is no Toni Morrison but he's good -- took their own lives.

There was a great article in _The New Yorker_ , I think, about how Hemingway owes his succinctness (which is cool) to Gertrude Stein.

The most important novel in the history of world literature is a sci- fi- techno- thriller by a woman: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: “Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change.”

The reason that old women exploring their sexuality in a myriad of ways -- wearing lingerie probably being the tamest and most predictable way -- is considered offensive is that it reminds men that women change after menopause, that heterosexual sex changes after menopause. Once women don't have to think about pregnancy or birth control, sex is reborn, reckless and multifarious. And, natch, deeply threatening to men and male power. Anything that the binary, sexually repressed, pornographic (i.e. using sex as a means of social control)culture wants to say about women goes out the window. And we just get to be ourselves.

Elijah McClain — violinist, bodyworker, animal lover, community volunteer — would have been 25-years old on February 25, 2021. McClain is the 23-year-old Black man who died after being attacked by Aurora, CO police officers who put him in a chokehold. Although he was on the ground, restrained, when EMT’s arrived, they injected him with ketamine, a strong tranquilizer. McClain died in the hospital.

Nary a business book, no self-help, not a single writing guidebook, not even a novel. Gee, whiz, Medium readers, can language do that?

Here are the seven powerhouse books from 2020 that keep me growing and engaged as we shelter in place.

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson (Random House).Okay, okay. Oprah Winfry called it the best book ever written. Wilkerson, author of The Warmth of Other Suns, argues that the United States can only be understood — and redeemed— by admitting that in our country, power, economics, and culture are all defined and constrained by a brutal caste system based on race. She writes unflinchingly about slavery and Jim Crow, and today — and shows how Hitler’s Nazis used…
